Dental Implants: Leave Them to a Specialist

Do you have missing teeth? Are you constantly worried about your smile or finding that it is harder to speak? Dr. Kathryn E. Ryan is an experienced prosthodontist in Jacksonville, FL who can help you restore your smile and improve your overall health with dental implants.

How Dental Implants Work

A prosthodontist will create your dental implants based on an individual treatment plan that accounts for your specific needs. The first step of the implant process involves implanting the tooth root, which is a small titanium post that we place directly in your jaw bone. Your then bone needs to heal around the posts before the rest of the process can occur, and this process takes between six and 12 weeks.   After you heal, we attach an abutment to each post. This small connector post is what holds your new tooth in place. We then attach your new tooth or teeth to the abutment. The crowns are made using impressions of your bite to determine their arrangement. If you are not receiving a full set of implants, your partials will match your natural teeth.

Health Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants provide several health benefits. Missing teeth cause other teeth to become loose, but implants prevent that problem. They do not require reduction of your natural teeth to fit, leading to improved overall oral hygiene. Implants also make it easier for you to speak and to eat your favorite foods without worrying about pain or denture slippage. Because implants protect your jawbone, they can prevent further bone loss and may even reverse it. Finally, implants improve your mental health by making you feel more confident in your appearance and causing you to smile more often.

Visit a prosthodontist for your dental implants. A cosmetic dentist’s training is complete after only several courses, but a prosthodontist attends classes for three extra years to become a true expert in implant dentistry.
