ABOUT PDO THREADS

At Parkway Prosthodontics in Jacksonville, FL, Dr. Ryan and Dr. Mularkey offer advanced dental and facial rejuvenation procedures. One of the popular treatments available is a thread lift, a minimally invasive procedure designed to tighten and lift the skin. Unlike traditional facelift surgery, thread lifts utilize dissolvable sutures, making them a less invasive option that can often be completed in under 45 minutes without the need for a scalpel.

Specifically, Polydioxanone (PDO) thread lifts are performed using biodegradable polyester sutures. These thread lifts are ideal for skin rejuvenation, while newer types of thread lifts excel at lifting sagging skin.

Ideal candidates for thread lifts include:

  • People with minimal signs of aging who need just a small lift. Good candidates are those patients who are starting to see some droopiness of the brow, cheeks, jowls and/or neck and would like to see a lift effect but do not want the risk, scars, or recovery of a real browlift, facelift, or neck lift operation.

  • People who have had some relapse from a previous plastic surgery procedure such as a facelift or neck lift.

  • People who do not wish to undergo a surgical facelift or neck lift for various reasons such as not wanting a prolonged recovery of a stand facelift or do not wish to spend money on an expensive facelift.

Curious about what sets PDO thread lifts apart from other types and what to expect during the procedure? Let's delve into the details together.

How long does a PDO thread lift last?

The authors of a 2019 study found that a PDO thread lift caused immediate improvements in skin sagging after the procedure. However, there was a noticeable decline in results 6 months later. Improvements were no longer apparent after 1 year.

In a study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, a surgeon with 16 years of thread lift experience says he has seen results last anywhere from 1 to 9 years. Younger people tend to have results that last 3 to 4 years. Older people with poor skin volume or elasticity tend to only see benefits for 1 to 2 years.

PLA and PCA thread lifts tend to last longer since the sutures take longer to dissolve.
