HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO ADJUST TO YOUR NEW DENTURES IN JACKSONVILLE?

Unfortunately, there are countless reasons for tooth loss: gum disease, genetics, trauma and a lack of dental care are just some of them. But, fortunately, there are fantastic replacement options such as dentures that can restore your quality of life after tooth loss. Having said that, it’s normal for patients to need time to adjust to them. After all, your lips, cheeks, tongue and teeth have been working together your entire life to help you eat, speak, laugh and smile – so, in some ways, you have to re-learn those things after getting dentures in Jacksonville. But you’ll be glad to know that an estimated 35 million Americans have successfully made it through this transition and adjusted to their dentures beautifully. Keep reading to learn more about what you can expect after getting dentures and how you can adjust to them as easily as possible!

HOW WILL YOUR DENTURES FEEL IN THE BEGINNING?

Your dentures will probably feel quite strange and foreign at first, which is completely normal. You might experience mild gum tenderness or “sore spots,” and you could notice a temporary increase in salivary flow.

In fact, it’s not uncommon for patients to schedule a follow-up visit in the first few weeks so that small adjustments can be made to relieve pressure on their gums. Remember, with a little time (and patience), you’ll feel more and more comfortable with your new dentures with each passing day.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO ADJUST TO YOUR NEW DENTURES?

In general, most patients will adjust to their dentures within a few weeks, but that can depend on several factors. For example, if your teeth were just extracted recently, your gum tissue may be more susceptible to irritation.

Since each patient’s case is unique, it’s especially important to follow your prosthodontist’s recommendations through every step of the process. That way, you’ll heal better and have a more comfortable experience from start to finish.

With that said, there are a few things that every patient can do to alleviate any initial gum tenderness.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO EASE THE TRANSITION?

All of the following can reduce any discomfort you may have after getting Jacksonville dentures:

  • Eat soft but nutritious foods and cut up any solid food into smaller pieces. Also, try to chew evenly on both sides of your mouth to prevent your denture from tipping on one side.

  • For the first 3-4 weeks, minimize (or be extra careful with) hot foods or any foods with a sharp edge.

  • Read or even sing a song out loud to get more comfortable speaking. If your dentures make a clicking sound, speak or sing more slowly.

  • Keep your denture and gum tissue clean with good oral hygiene habits at home.

  • Schedule follow-up visits whenever necessary so that adjustments can be made.

It’s also a good idea to have a trusted prosthodontist make your denture. They’re experts in replacing teeth, so you’ll know that you have a high-quality denture from the start.

With these tips and tricks, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying your new smile for many years!
